Designing for Organizational Health

We actively support an organizational design that intentionally develops team members as active decision-makers, co-creators and collaborators. Organizational well-being is impossible without an ecosystem of committed team members, engaged partners and a thriving community. Our iterative and evolutionary approach is informed by a living systems design to address organizational roles and responsibilities, systems and processes as well as resource allocation and investment. We are actively involved in designing, creating and managing organizations who desire a more holistic and regenerative approach. We call this the Regenerative Organization.

Regenerative Design Patterns

We believe that regenerative organizations are organized around the following guiding living systems patterns. These patterns lead us in our design and decision-making, both with our clients and within our organization.

Holism

We recognize the process of living and regeneration can only be understood as an emergent phenomenon of the whole system.

We design and operate our organization in a way that recognizes that the whole is more than the sum of its parts and create conditions for emergent outcomes to arise.

Interdependence

We recognize that regeneration and resilience emerge from the wide diversity of interdependent relationships in the system.

We design and operate our organization in a way that recognizes the inherent value of all relationships and creates conditions for resilience and potential to emerge from the diversity of all relationships.  

Uniqueness

While we recognize patterns, we also recognize that each living system and every member of the system has its own unique expression in time, place, and context.

We design and operate our organization in a way that recognizes that all members of an organization are original, and we nurture the possibility for all member’s unique expression of their genius and potential.

Evolutionary

We recognize life both responds to and creates change with its surrounding environment, maintaining an ever-changing balance.

We design and operate our organization in a way that maintains a dynamic balance with an ever-changing surrounding environment and actively creates conditions that support life in our organization and in our environment.

Nodal

We recognize the process of living and regeneration is dependent on decentralized and distributed flow of energy and resources.

We design and operate our organization in a way that is not centrally controlled and organized and that resources and decision making are equitably distributed throughout the entire system.

Developmental

We recognize living systems are maintained through the healthy growth and development of all members of the system.

We design and operate our organization in a way that equitably invests in the growth and health of all members not, just a few.

We've been treating organizations as if they are machines, pushing productivity and efficiency at the expense of long-term health. In this model, humans are resources that must be aligned on an org chart ― just like cogs in a machine. But organizations (like humans) are not machines. Organizations are complex living systems. And living systems require a very different management and design approach. During nRhythm's Regenerative Design Lab, we will support you to make the necessary shifts to design in a way that aligns with a living systems approach.
