Regenerative Business Model Mini Workbook

By nRhythm

Business models have been defined in many ways over the years, for example:

  • "Assumptions about what a company gets paid for” [Peter Drucker]

  • “A business model is really a set of assumptions or hypotheses” [Alex Osterwalder, Business Model Canvas]

  • “A design for the successful operation of a business, identifying revenue sources, customer base, products, and details of financing.” [Oxford

Yet across any single application of a business model, one could argue that it holds one common purpose: to serve as a framework for describing how the different elements of a business work.

At their worst, business models thrive at the expense of people and planet. From junior bankers at Goldman Sachs working 95-hour+ work weeks, to chocolate companies using child labor to keep prices competitive while causing mass deforestation, to oil companies extracting, burning, and producing as much oil as possible leading to climate change.

Meanwhile, at their best, business models can regenerate health and potential in landscapes and communities. Thousands of organizations are making commitments and taking action to transform the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet by joining B Lab. Businesses are getting certified by Savory Institute’s Land to Market Program, the world’s first verified regenerative sourcing solution for meat, dairy, wool and leather.

Yet still, most of our underlying assumptions about what business models are is narrow, linear, and functional in scope. As managers or business owners, how can we broaden our definition and consider a new approach to business model design, one that creates health and potential for people, landscapes, and communities?

Shifting Towards Regenerative Business Models

nRhythm created the Regenerative Business Model Mini-Workbook, designed to help you discover if your business model is aligned with Regenerative Design Principles (RDPs). This mini-workbook will help you:

  • Understand the six RDPs and practical applications
  • Evaluate your current business model using the RDPs with a 10-question assessment
  • Reflect and get to action on how you can evolve your business model

We offer you this Mini Workbook as a starting point for meaningful conversations. Our work to evolve our business models towards embracing a regenerative approach requires an ongoing commitment to asking ourselves difficult questions. The conversation is everything and our work is never "complete." We encourage you to utilize this as a tool to explore your business model's relationship with RDPs with your team and community.
